The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
The official full name of the UK is the “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”. While the term “United Kingdom” is used on formal occasions such as government conferences and diplomatic dealings, the term “Britain” or “Great Britain” is widely used for the nation.
When people refer to the country , they often use different names such as Britain, Great Britain, the British Islands, the United Kingdom or the UK. Some people simply say “England” which is incorrect and may be offensive to people from the other three regions.
The UK is a kingdom which consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is physically separate but is part of the union with Great Britain, while the Republic of Ireland is an independent country.
